Identifying Epidermolysis Bullosa Patient Needs and Perceived Treatment Benefits: An Explorative Study Using the Patient Benefit Index
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a genetic blistering skin condition for which no cure exists. Symptom alleviation and quality of life are therefore central to EB care. This study aimed to gain insight into EB patient needs and benefits from current clinical care. Two questionnaires were administered cross-sectionally to adult EB patients at the Dutch expertise centre for blistering diseases. Patient needs and benefits were analyzed using the patient benefit index survey (PBI-S). Ancillary data… Continue reading

Age-related Differences in Tumour Characteristics and Prognostic Factors for Disease Progression in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Head and Neck
Guidelines for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck do not take the age of the patient into account, but instead assume equal tumour characteristics and prognostic factors for poor outcome in younger and elderly patients. The aim of this study was to compare tumour characteristics of younger ( Continue reading

The aim of this study was to compare tumour characteristics of younger (< 75 years) and elderly (≥ 75 years) patients and identify age-specific risk factors for progression of disease, comprising local recurrence, nodal metastasis and distant metastasis…. New Insights in Hidradenitis Suppurativa from a Population-based Dutch Cohort: Prevalence, Smoking Behaviour, Socioeconomic Status and Comorbidities
CONCLUSION: Our study showed a higher prevalence of HS in the Northern Netherlands compared to the overall estimated prevalence of 1% and identified several new associated comorbidities. Continue reading

Comparison of Two Diagnostic Assays for Anti-Laminin 332 Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid
Anti-laminin 332 mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) is an autoimmune blistering disease characterized by predominant mucosal lesions and autoantibodies against laminin 332. The exact diagnosis of anti-laminin 332 MMP is important since nearly 30% of patients develop solid cancers. This study compared two independently developed diagnostic indirect immunofluorescence (IF) tests based on recombinant laminin 332 expressed in HEK239 cells (biochip mosaic assay) and the migration trails of cultured… Continue reading

Insights into clinical and diagnostic findings as well as treatment responses in patients with mucous membrane pemphigoid: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Patients with MMP present with a heterogeneous clinical presentation, and new symptoms may develop during the disease course. Cancer screening should be considered for patients with MMP and, in particular, for those with autoantibodies against laminin-332. Continue reading

The effectiveness of antibacterial therapeutic clothing based on silver or chitosan as compared with non-antibacterial therapeutic clothing in patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (ABC trial): study protocol for a pragmatic randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects 10 to 20% of children and between 2 and 15% of the adults in Western Europe. Since 2000, therapeutic clothing or functional textiles based on silver or chitosan as antibacterial agents were introduced for AD. These agents aim to reduce skin colonization with Staphylococcus (S.) aureus. Increased colonization with S. aureus is correlated with increased AD severity. The antimicrobial effects of silver and… Continue reading

Patients’ perspectives on quality of care for chronic hand eczema: A qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: To better meet the needs of patients, more explanation should be given about the causes of HE and the final diagnosis. Besides focusing on the treatment, it is also important to focus on its impact on the patient and options for psychosocial and peer support should be discussed. Furthermore, the beneficial role of the specialized nurse as part of integrated care was emphasized. Continue reading
